The last flight from Haneda Airport to Hakodate Airport departs at 17:25. So, if you are planning to arrive at Narita airport in the afternoon or evening, we strongly recommend that you stay one night in a hotel in the vicinity of Narita airport, or in the center of Tokyo. Then, on the following morning, go to Haneda Airport by Airport Limoisine Bus.\n\n2. For information about getting from Narita to Haneda, try this web page; http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2027.html.\n\n3. Sapporo, the biggest city in Hokkaido, has an airport (Sapporo/New Chitose Airport) which is larger than the one in Hakodate. However, it takes about 3.5 hrs to get to Hakodate by train from Sapporo, so it is not a realistic option to fly to Sapporo first and then travel to Hakodate by train, unless of course you plan to spend a few days in Sapporo before coming to Hakodate.\n\n4. "The Golden Week" is a collection of four national holidays within seven days (in 2006, from 29th April to 7th May). In combination with well placed weekends, the Golden Week becomes one of Japan's busiest holiday seasons. Trains, airports and sightseeing spots get very crowded during Golden Week, and accommodation in tourist areas are booked out well in advance. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you reserve your flights and hotels as soon as possible.

An hour's bus rise from the city is the health resort of Jozankei-onsen (saline springs), on the River Toyohira, which rapidly developed into a thriving spa after the opening of the road from Sapporo in 1871. Beauty spots in the vicinity of the resort are the Shiraito-no-taki Waterfall, the Nishikibashi Bridge and the crag of Futami-Iwa.\n-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------\nThe mystical emerald green lake -- Lake Shikotsu.\nLake Shikotsu is a typical crater lake located in the western part of Hokkaido. 30 minutes by car from both downtown Chitose and Tomakomai. And it's the closest National Park to Sapporo, about one hour by car. The mysterious lake is surrounded by over 1,000-meter-class mountains such as Mt. Tarumae. This natural environment and the lakeside hot springs Onsen facilities offer a relaxing vacation or weekend getaway for health and luxury.\n\nLake Shikotsu is Japan's second deepest lake at 360 meters and is the country's northernmost ice-free lake. It also has the second largest water volume of water only to Lake Biwa. According to a study by Ministry of the Environment, the lake has the cleanest water in Japan. Thus, Lake Shikotsu is the cleanest and the biggest lake among National Park Lakes in Japan.\n\nThe picturesque view of the lake varies with each season. The lake area holds various events and festivals all year long. The most fantastic one is the Lake Shikotsu Hyoto Festival, from late January to mid February. During the festival, the lake shines in natural blue at sunshine, and illuminated with many lighten-up ice sculptures at night.\n\n**cruises\n**biking

!Morgen\n\nLake Chuzenji (Chuzenjiko) is a beautiful lake with forested shores at the foot of the sacred volcano Mount Nantai in Okunikko ("Inner Nikko"). The lake was formed by lava flows of the now extinct volcano several thousand years ago. It is part of Nikko National Park.\n\nAccess to Lake Chuzenji and the inner regions of the national park is via the "Irohazaka Winding Road". The road ascends more than 400 meters in altitude and is named "Iroha", because the original road consisted of 48 needlepoint curves, the same number as there are letters in the Japanese syllabary, formerly known as "iroha". There are separate roads for uphill and downhill traffic.\n\nChuzenji Onsen, a touristy hot spring resort, is located at the top of the Irohazaka road, at the eastern end of the lake. The resort's most popular attraction is the Kegon-no-taki, a spectacular, 97 meter high waterfall. The base of the waterfall can be accessed via an elevator.\n\nA nice panoramic view of the Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji can be enjoyed from the Akechidaira Plateau, which is accessible via a ropeway or on foot. To take the ropeway, get off at the Akechidaira bus stop, one stop before Chuzenji Onsen (served only by buses heading in direction of Chuzenji Onsen). \n\n[img[3806_01.jpg]]\n[img[3806_02.jpg]]\n\n!Namiddag\n

Ashina Naomori built the town first castle in 1384 and called it Higashi Kurokawa Yakata. Gamou Ujisato extended the castle in 1593 and renmaned in Tsuruga-jo (鶴ヶ城). The town was then ruled by the Aizu Matsudaira daimyo from 1662 to 1868.\n\nThe town was loyal to the Tokugawa shogunate and in 1868, a group of young local samurai, known as the Byakkotai (白虎隊, "White Tigers Band") rebelled against the new Imperial government of Meiji. The Byakkotai fought for a month before all commiting ritual suicide on top of Iimori-yama Hill (飯盛山), where their graves are still visited by nostalgic of samurai loyalty. Also note the 18th century Sazae-do Hall at the top of the hill.\n\nIn 1874, the Meiji government burnt down the castle, which symbolized the samurai spirit of the region. In 1965, Tsuruga-jo Castle (¥400, open 8:30am-5pm) was reconstructed in accordance with its original design.\n\nBetween the castle and Iimori-yama, you will find the beguiling Oyaku-en Garden (御薬園, ¥300, Apr-Oct 8am-5pm; Nov-March 8:30am-4:30pm). The garden takes its name ('oyaku' means 'medicine') from the medicinal herbs grown there, and local herbal tea can be purchased at the souvenir shop.\n\nSouth-east of Oyaku-en, a relatively interesting Samurai Residence Complex (¥800, Apr-Oct 8:30am-5:30pm, Nov-Mar 9am-4:30pm) with attached museum and good explanatory leaflets in English.\n\nThe town is quite spread-out, and you might consider catch a bus or taxi between the various sightseeing places. \n
